House Roof

- Remove tree branches from within 10 feet of your roof
- Remove dead leaves and pine needles from your roof.
- Check your roofing material, you can install fire resistant roof materials, ask your local fire department for advice.

Yard/Garden

- Don’t put any woodpiles within 30 feet of any structure
- Clear any dry or dead grass or brush. This is usually very easy to do!
- Keep your gas powered BBQ (butane or propane) at least 30 feet from your house or any structures.

Landscape

- The phrase most used here is “defensible space” (also known as a “fuel modification zone”). This means removing all flammable vegetation from 100 feet of your house and any other structures on your property.
- Fire resistant plants can be useful, we’ll look at that in another post.
- Trees should be space at least 10 feet apart.
- Trees over 18 feet should have no branches closer than 6 feet to the ground.

Videotape the outside and inside of your house. This is great for insurance purposes if the unfortunate occurs.

You can also put items in your car, such as:

Hopefully you’ll never need it, but you’ll be thankful you took the time if you do.
